Rally for Reghan

This is my first cousin, Kris and his lovely family. Kris and I are only a year apart so it of course made sense that when we were kids on family vacations we were buddies. We got along pretty well and I always loved spending time with him. A lot has happened in the last decade since I've gotten married and we don't see each other very often, but when I got to see him last summer I realized how much I truly missed my friend. They have had a quite unfortunate battle for his son Reghan because of issues with Reghan's birth mother dealing with abuse. Kris is an amazing father and is a hero to his little guy (who btw is a spitting image of his dad) I was fortunate enough to meet his little family last summer and his lovely partner, Loleta. They are so sweet and love their kids more than anything and now they are fighting to get their children back because of unfortunate events out of their control. Please read the following which is written by my other cousin (Kris's sister) who explains the situation and started a fund to help them get their children back. They really need our help! I put the widget in my sidebar (unfortunately I couldn't edit it so that it looked normal, but at least it fits for now) OR you can....

"This is my brother Kris’ beautiful family.
They have been torn apart by a flawed system, and the road to getting them back together is piled high with roadblocks.
The system which is supposed to help children has taken theirs; taken them from the people who love them the most.

Nearly six years ago, Reghan was born. A spitting image of my brother, he brought a light to his life – a happiness I’d never seen in him. Despite splitting with Reghan’s birth mother, my brother was bound and determined to give him the best life possible.

Soon, he met his partner Loleta. She brought with her two of the most caring, smart, and respectful children I’ve ever met.
Together, they would have another son, and their family was complete.

And then everything changed.
Reghan was growing up fast. He was incredibly smart and so loving. But they realized that he knew, said, and did things that no two year old should know anything about.
They soon realized the signs were of serious physical, mental, and sexual abuse – at the hands of his own birth mother.
Kris and Loleta began documenting everything they could, taking him to doctors to show the things they couldn't, and enlisting the help of the local courts.
It seemed insanely difficult to get anyone to take them seriously.

For the past three years, they’ve been fighting battle after battle in court, disrupting their family, putting strain on their relationships, and emptying their wallets.
Over 2 years ago, Reghan was placed solely in the care of Kris and Loleta, and the birth mother was stripped of any and all visitation rights. But they still haven’t gotten to a final decision with the courts, and she still has legal rights.

Early this summer, Reghan was hospitalized with stomach pain and a distended abdomen. He was later air-lifted to the University of Michigan Mott Children’s hospital, 60 miles away, and emergency surgery was performed.
He had a ruptured intestine, they removed his appendix, and they found tons of scar tissue – only some of which they were able to remove safely. The scar tissue, they were sure, was from the past abuse, and Kris and Loleta were sure they finally had the proof they needed to put his birth mother away for good, and to terminate her rights completely.

Some of the doctors, however, felt they couldn’t explain the injury. It’s usually something seen with a sudden or intense impact, yet there was no bruising or any other evidence of such an impact. At the very least, they thought they would see internal bruising, even if external had not yet appeared, but there was nothing. The scar tissue could have been the cause, and was documented as such, in the report Dr. Markman, a member of the University of Michigan Child Protection Team, gave to Shiawassee County Child Protective Services.

Dr. Markman only spoke with Kris and Loleta very briefly, while Reghan was prepped for surgery. She told them that she was there to help walk them through this and to be their liaison through the process. They never saw her after that initial interview, but she sent CPS to speak to them immediately after surgery, so Reghan came to after surgery, without his parents by his side. CPS was called because Dr. Markman felt that Kris and Lo weren’t forthcoming with information – though clearly distracted by a child about to undergo emergency surgery, with life threatening injuries. As well, she has asked if there was a history of abuse, but didn’t care to hear the circumstances.

Nearly a week later, they were ready to release Reghan from the hospital, but in a twisted mess of policy, they decided that since the doctor’s wouldn’t say for sure that the injuries were a result of the prior abuse, they wouldn’t release him to Kris and Lo. They took him to stay with my mom – Kris and Lo were not allowed to accompany him there.

And then, to add salt to the wound, a few days later, CPS decided that because they wouldn’t allow Reghan in the home, they also couldn’t allow the other children in the home, even though CPS was clear that they had no concerns of the safety of the other children.

While Dr. Markman, who barely saw or spoke with Reghan, states that his injuries were from a trauma, a specialist has stated otherwise. The only thing the doctors agree on is that the scar tissue is from past abuse, and that the scar tissue weakened him and made him more susceptible to injury. There were no signs of an impact, or trauma, except the previous abuse, and yet Dr. Markman believes there is reason for inquiry.

All of the family was separated. My brother and Loleta could not be there to console their son as he healed from major surgery. The other kids were taken to stay with different family members, Reghan now in a foster home. Everyone’s world has been ripped apart. My brother and Loleta are left with an uphill battle.

Kris and Lo are prepared to fight as long as they have to, to have their family whole again. They are hard working and dedicated, but doctors and lawyers come with a hefty price tag. Reghan will need more medical care, more therapy, and more lawyers to fight for him. This on top of all of the medical bills and lawyers’ fees they’ve already racked up in the last 3 years.

Please help me, help them, to finish the fight. To get Reghan, and all of the kids, home. To get Reghan every ounce of help he needs. And to finally, and fully terminate his abuser’s rights, so he can feel safe."

Please do what you can to help! They deserve to have their family together! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Strawberry Patch and What to Do With All Those Strawberries

Well, I should just say that I'm a little bit behind...I've been taking a break from The Redheaded Princess because of the craziness of life. Between school, work, and my family I just don't have a lot of extra time lately so the RHP has been taking a much needed back seat.

So real quick I thought I'd share my trip to the strawberry patch last month. We love to go up to ShadyBrook Farm in Yardley where they have a cute little market and a playground as well as a deli window where you could buy some lunch if you'd like. The girls got a little time on the playground this time but we decided not to eat there this time. My three princesses were great pickers!

Yeah, I don't usually get in pictures unless I do it myself...but here's my lovely little family with our box of strawberries.

So, my question is: What do you do with all your strawberries? Well, I made some freezer jam with mine, a strawberry gorgonzola grilled cheese, and some strawberry shortcake (recipes to come). Even after all that, I had a bunch of strawberries left over. So, I decided to hull the strawberries, cut them in half, rinse them and freeze them on a cookie sheet.

Once they were frozen, I put them in a gallon freezer bag and used them in some homemade smoothies. I wish I'd have taken a pic because they were lovely AND delicious! Oh well, next time...What do You make with your strawberries?

Rockin with Disney

Today was so much fun! We decided last minute to take the girls to see Disney's ice show Rockin Ever After. Princess6 and Princess9 both had mentioned it multiple times and since they are neither ones to ask for things too often and have done amazingly well in school and are all around just good kids...it was decided that we'd surprise them. So on our family calendar I wrote 'Big Surprise!' on today's date. Of course my detail-oriented Princess6 who studies that calendar and marks off each day noticed immediately. They were anticipating the event for about 30 hours. Last night Princess9 wasn't feeling too hot and all she could think of was not wanting to miss the big surprise. She was so pitiful....so today she kept thinking of things it could be and even guessed correctly but we convinced her she was wrong without lying...something tricky to do with a smart 9 year old. I quietly packed their princess dresses and we loaded up heading down to South Philly.

They still didn't know here :)
I think it made it more exciting for them to anticipate the surprise. I would have hated it. I like surprises but only if you spring it on me. I usually figure it out if I get any type of hint or clue. So anyway...they were so excited when we finally parked and we told them. They had a blast and Princess3 was in awe. She was so cute because Daddy kept asking he questions and she was so engrossed in the show she didn't hear him. I love having kids and being able to do these fun things with them. It's the memories that they take with them. I have to remember that they aren't going to always remember the day to day things but when we make an effort to have a special day whether its just breaking out the china and having a fancy meal for no reason or decorating the whole house on their birthdays...make the days special and they will cherish them.

So excited..Princess6 asked me every couple minutes "How much longer till it starts? How many minutes?" When I told her 7 she was so sweet with her little "Yay!" She's my quiet one and though she didn't jump for joy..she was extremely happy.

{DIY} Family Tree in Pictures

Hey Everyone! Hope y'all are having a great new year! Today I'm going to share with you my favorite DIY project to date. This has been several years in the making because we are making a Family Tree in Pictures! I'm one of those people who cherish where I came from. I want to know my background and see the people who are a part of me. It's crazy to see features of mine in the faces of these strangers I've never been so fortunate to meet. So after getting photos from several sources like my Grandmother, Aunts' facebook pages, mother-in-law, etc..I felt I had enough to at least get my project started. It's certainly not finished but I love what I have so far. I had a vision in my head of what I wanted to do after I saw a wall in Paula Deen's home with framed pictures of her ancestors. I put that together with old farm windows and then began my search. I looked on Craigslist for the past six months for either old farm windows or a door with lots of window panes. FINALLY on Christmas Eve I found a farm house not too far that had a ton because they just replaced ALL their windows! I got 6 for 40 bucks! (I only needed 3 but figured I should grab extra just in case)

Once I got them home, I cleaned the windows and frame and windexed the glass.

I used a toothbrush I have in the kitchen specifically for cleaned nooks and crannies and got all the dirt out of the many crevices. Next, I couldn't figure out how the heck I was supposed to hang these on the wall securely. We thought about drilling wall anchors and doing hinges so I could flip the windows up. But I didn't want to do that because I'd rather be able to take them off the wall if I need to. So I decided to check out Michael's.

Here's what I found. This PerfectHang picture hanging kit which is good for up to 30 pounds! For 5 bucks! Great deal! And it was SOOO easy to install!

First thing to do is to screw in each hook. I just eyed where I wanted to put them..Didn't bother measuring exactly. Here, I used a screw gun which took a total of 30 seconds for both. However, I discovered that it's not a good idea to have the hanging cord so near the top so I ended up moving them more like a third of the way from the top.

Next, I followed the diagram on the package to tie on the cord. You can cut the wire with scissors if there is excess but make sure it's secure first.

I never used one of these things before but I realized I LOVE IT! It holds up to 30 pounds and the design is great because the pin goes in at a downward angle and only makes a pinhole. So if you mess up...your wall isn't destroyed!

I did this with all three of my windows and then hung them to line them up.

Next, I purchased several yards of burlap for $3.99/yard from Joann Fabrics with a 40% of coupon. I got 3.5 yards so it was super cheap! $7! And I have extra because I wanted to be able to use it for other things too and since the nearest Joann's is 20 min away I really didn't want to have to make another trip.
Now, I laid the fabric on the window and stapled it with a staple gun in one corner. Then I used my fabric shears to cut the piece to fit.

Nex, I used a sharpie to carefully outline the window panes so I knew where the pictures should go.

My next dilemma was how to stick the pictures to the burlap without being permanent but strong enough to hold. I discovered these in Joann's. UGlu Dashes. They stick to fabric AND paper! I think they were $5 for 162 dashes.

Now's the fun part! Lining up my amazing pictures! I even have some from the late 1800s of my great great great grandparents! I used this window for MY side of the family. The upper panes (and lower right) were for my mom's sided of the family (I have a lot more pics of her side and the pic of my Grandma Ethyl is original and she has a hand-written note to my grandpa so this one is very special and deserved it's own window). The bottom panes are for my dad's side. Once I was done, I carefully pulled the stapled corner out and discarded the staple. I carefully flipped over the burlap square and inserted it onto the back of the window. Then I used the staple gun to secure it to the back but left the bottom open so I can add more pics until I feel like I am finished. I did this with the other two panes as well.

The center pane of the center window is my wedding photo. The pane beneath that is for a family pic of me, my husband and daughters and of me and Prince Charming when were were kids. Left two panes are for my parents and the right two are for his parents. The window on the right is for HIS side of the family. The upper three are his mother's family and the lower three are his father's family. Here's a closer look....

My side of the family

As you can see there are quite a few blank spots which I hope to fill with more ancestors. I am really excited to see these pictures and to remember the people that came before us. I think sometimes, there'll be a day when I have great great great grandkids and wonder, will they know anything about me? I think so especially with the modern technology we have. It was different back in the days of my ancestors especially since pictures those days were so rare to begin with. I will pass this family history on to my kids and I hope they have the same appreciation and cherish these photos the way I do. It's really neat to see my daughters' faces in the images of their grandparents as children. Words cannot describe how much I love his project! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and maybe inspires you to do something similar for your family. Happy New Year, All!

{Philly Love} Forbidden Drive

I'm back with another edition of Philly Love, aren't y'all excited?! On Saturday, out of the blue, hubby said he wanted to go to Wissahickon Valley Park (also known as Forbidden Drive). What?? For someone who isn't always the most spontaneous this was a surprise. Of course I agreed and we all hopped to. So, geared up with our 'sneaks' as our lovely Philadelphians call them (I always called them tennis shoes or tennishoes...it was pronounced as one word...lol) and were on our way. I had never been here before but had passed it many times and knew OF it because my sister in law likes to come here. It always struck me as a pretty cool place because it's actually IN the city limits. The trail is apparently 7 miles long along the Wissahickon Creek and ends near the Philadelphia art museum (you know where Rocky ran up the steps). There is also a little restaurant along the way called the Valley Green Inn.
The one trail, as you can see in the above picture is quite wide. Cyclists and walkers (and I believe people on horseback) have plenty of room for an easy stroll. (Warning: I saw lots of poison ivy, so watch out) We didn't walk a terribly long way, a little over a mile where we turned around and headed back. It's pretty tough for the littlest one. As her daddy constantly reminds me, "For every step I take it takes her two or three, so she technically is walking a lot more than we are." It's true, I know, but I still forget, poor thing. So after we turned around, we decided to try our hand at the other side of the river, the hiking trail. But first we had to cross the covered bridge. Apparently, according to this sign, it is the only covered bridge in any major U.S. city. Pretty cool. So we made our trek across the bridge and began hiking. Let me tell you, it wasn't that easy for a family with a 3 year old. Real smart, McFly, real smart. The girls did amazing though. We worked up a tiny sweat, well, scratch that, girls don't sweat, we glisten...ha ha. There was a LOT more poison ivy this way.  But the girls didn't touch any of it, since I was pointing it out constantly. We probably went a total of 2.5 miles altogether. Not bad for having a three year old with us, huh? She did really great too, I was so proud of all of them. Note my princess5 in the background? She, of course, has her pink tulle skirt on. We will definitely be going back. Next time we want to make it to the Valley Green In for lunch. One day, maybe DH and I will even bike the entire 7 miles. That'd be fun, and pretty amazing. Like I said, it's IN the city of Philadelphia. We have some pretty cool things to do in this city. The hiking reminded me of my days in Louisiana, (which were short-lived) when me and my sister used to explore the woods all day long. Kinda neat to have the great outdoors in a place like this.

Bailey Family Peanut Butter Pancakes

Anyone like peanut butter? How about pancakes? Well then I have a great recipe for you. This recipe has been in my family for years and years through my Grandma Ethyl's side. I make it almost every weekend for my princesses and they love it, as do I. We even have them when we go camping. Though the traditional pancake has some type of syrup poured over it, this is no traditional pancake. Sweet tooth is required...and a glass of milk. For these pancakes we make a special batter and a peanut butter dipping sauce. When you eat it, you merely tear pieces off and dip it into the peanut butter sauce. Super delicious! You must try them!

Ingredients:

For batter:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
3/4 cup milk (add more if needed for right consistency)

For sauce:
1/2 cup creamy Peanut butter
1 cup water
1/4 cup sugar

1. In a small saucepan add water and 1/4 cup sugar and stir. Bring to a boil over medium high heat. You are creating a simple syrup here.

2. Preheat skillet over medium heat. I find that the pancakes cook best over medium heat and tend to burn any higher. Also, having the skillet preheated helps to cook them faster, especially the first couple batches.

3. Next, mix flour, sugar, baking powder and milk. Add milk slowly and add more to get the right consistency of a traditional pancake batter, not too thick but not too runny either.

4. Lightly spray skillet with an oil spray and pour in about 1/4 cup of batter.

The pancake will get a lot of bubbles on the top. Once they begin to pop and the edges start to look done, carefully flip the pancake and cook on the other side.

5. Meanwhile, once the simple syrup has come to a boil. Turn it off until you are ready to make the peanut butter sauce. In a bowl add the peanut butter and 1/4 cup of the simple syrup that you made. You can add more if it's too thick. Sometimes I make the sauce thinner. Sometimes I make it a little more fudgy consistency.

6. The sauce will not look right at first. Have some faith. Mix it with a spoon and just keep stirring, just keep stirring (I keep hearing Dorie from Finding Nemo singing "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming" as I write this). So anyway...let's focus...

7. Here's what the sauce will look like when it is ready. Serve a dollop of this on the plate next to the pancake, make sure your hands are clean and enjoy!

Happy Birthday Princess3!

Happy Birthday to the most precious three year old I know. Here we are at round 2 of the birthday celebrations...the actual party. It was a lot of work, but so nice to spend time with friends and family. I cooked up some Carolina BBQ, cole slaw, potato salad, cornbread, baked beans, and sweet tea. I was going for a Carolina pig pickin' without the pig and barrel roaster. We had a couple kiddie pools set up with slides in them, our swingset, and the slip n slide was on the hill making it extra fun. Spending time relaxing my friends and family celebrating my princess made for a great day. I was exhausted but enjoyed every minute!

our kiddie pools and Simple Set pool. We had lawn chairs at the top of the hill.
This is so much fun! I went down it a couple times the week before. (Feet First..not head first...I'm not crazy..anymore)
